Old Issue Resurfaces with Cordless Phones
Many may remember when cordless phones were introduced to the market and became widely popular in households. There was barely a home in which at least one of these phones wasn’t present.
However, some of these phones came with a unique problem attached to them. Whenever the battery was left uncharged and remained low for too long a period, they would randomly dial 911, causing problems for the emergency system and homeowners.
In 1991, the FCC required that all new cordless phones be upgraded with circuitry that required the base receive a security code from the handset before dialing the number. This has reduced the number of random 911 calls from cordless handsets significantly. But, it seems, that it hasn’t eradicated the problem completely.
A company in Indiana recently received a phone call from one of their monitored clients about the police showing up at their doorstep at 4 a.m. The officer was responding to a 911 phone call to the residence. However, the customer’s entire family had been in bed and in no way could have made the call. After the officer left, the customer called his alarm company to see what may have caused it. It was determined that a recently purchased VTech cordless phone had been left off its charging base for too long and subsequently dialed 911.
While these occurrences are much rarer now than in the past, it is worth noting that if a customer contacts you about a seemingly false 911 call, your operators might want to ask about the customer’s cordless phone to ensure it stays on the base when not in use.
The VTech phone in question was model number 6.0 LS6125-3.

Tri-Ed Goes to Bat for Kids

| (L-R)The staff of Tri-Ed Charlotte, NC hosting the highly successful Pitch in for Baseball charity event at their branch. Chuck Mcanless warehouse, Dan Cummings manager, Lisa Nichols sales, Ed Pycz sales. |
Tri-Ed, with the support of its vendor partners and caring customers, recently went to bat for underprivileged kids, hosting a Pitch in for Baseball charity event at every one of its Northeastern branches on Thursday, October 2. The Pitch in for Baseball organization collects and delivers new and gently-used youth baseball and softball equipment to underserved communities around the globe. America’s favorite pastime teaches young people about sportsmanship and teamwork, and getting out on the baseball field helps kids stay active and physically fit.
Each Tri-Ed branch drew a great turnout, and donations spanned everything from catchers gear to clothing to masks, gloves bats and brand new baseballs. Buzz Jackson, Branch Manager of the Pennsauken, NJ branch, for example, reports that “We received 300 baseballs from Napco, five cartons of equipment from Pelco, several dozen baseball caps from Aiphone & Samsung, and two large cartons of equipment from customers and vendors who attended.”
Vendors who supported the effort included Altronix, Bogen, Cooper-Wheelock, DSC, GE, ICC, Keri Systems, M&S, Napco, SAMSUNG-GVI, and Speco Technologies. In addition to helping this important charity, customers also had a venue to get psyched for the World Series and enjoyed complimentary beer, wine, soda, peanuts, popcorn, Cracker Jacks, hot dogs and hamburgers.

Michelle Houser, Branch Manager/Tri-Ed Virginia Beach, notes that “We are very blessed to have manufacturers and customers who believe that what we do is important. We thank them for making this Fund Drive so successful.” Further South, Dan Cummings, Manager of Tri-Ed’s Charlotte, NC branch, echoes the sentiment. “All of us in Charlotte had a fantastic time giving to a great cause. We thank everyone who donated equipment to ‘Pitch in for Baseball’ and all those who stopped in the evening of the event.”
Because the East Coast charity events were so successful, Tri-Ed will go into extra innings to help more children. On Friday, November 21 all branches in the Central and Western U.S. will host a Pitch in for Baseball BBQ lunch from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Vendors and customers are encouraged to drop by, have lunch, and donate to this worthy cause. Participating Tri-Ed branches span Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Antonio, Garden Grove, Las Vegas, North Hills, Portland, Sacramento, San Diego and San Leandro. DMP Offers Compact Ceiling Mount PIR with Remote Capability
Digital Monitoring Products (DMP) has released a new passive infrared (PIR) ceiling-mount motion detector. It’s the first PIR sensor that can be controlled remotely, either from the panel or from any network-connected PC via DMP Remote Link™ Panel management software. The 1126 is part of the broad selection of DMP wireless technology available, including sensors and panels like the XT Series ™ with built-in wireless capability.
The ability to remotely control the 1126 Motion Detector sensor enables faster, easier installation, and makes future programming changes more convenient. During installation and testing, the Walk Test Mode can be initiated from the panel.
Once in place, users can take advantage of the Disarm/Disable function. It automatically disables the 1126 when the area is disarmed, extending the typical five-year battery life to seven years. Other features include selectable high or low Sensitivity, and user-selected Pulse Count that can be programmed to allow multiple triggers before an alarm is initiated.
